secret to spawning final bosses in raids

my guildies think killing other bosses will expedite the process in which the boss spawns. is this true?

Yes it's based off of boss kills not time. Kill each of the main other bosses 3 times and final will spawn.

 

It can spawn sooner than that in your eyes at times since when you enter if it's not up some others might of killed some of those bosses before you entered and after the last time it spawned.

Not just raids, but PvP zones as well. Too often you see people standing around waiting for the 2 big cheeses to pop when farming insig, but if they would help killing the trash mobs, Kit would show up quicker, which helps bring on the big cheese.

 

For Poh, it is 9 bosses, any 9. So you can kill the same 3 bosses 3x if you like.
