how does soul shield works?

I equipped a soul shield, and the bonus shows there should be addition of hp. However, when i equipped it, my hp does not increase. My friend did the same thing and his hp increases? So how does this work? can someone explain to me? My profile(HP information) shows that equipment has 0 bonus hp.
