How much am I gimping myself for not being Hongmoon lvl 5? I try to grind the levels over the weekend but the amount of exp. needed just drains me.

It was pretty easy reaching diamond as HM1. You're missing out on some pretty powerful tools, especially against other Summoners and Force Masters since you need to talent Petal Storm against them but otherwise you can get all the necessities. The biggest gimp that wasn't just a "damage/healing nerf" was skipping out on Thorn Strike daze. Instead, I simply never even used the ability which helped me not accidently waste my Backstep (for some reason the "Tab" of Summoners is on hotkey 2) if I got cc'd just as I was about to use it.

Edit: Missing out on Beckon talents too, which is another knockdown.

My current play style doesn't rely all too much on my pet, however your comment on Petal Storm is quite compelling. 

 

That's weird, cause when I get CC'ed my tab stays put and never appears on 2. :/

I don't mean Tab in that regard. For other classes the big CC-escape is on Tab (Second Wind for BMs/BDs/FMs/KFMs, Stealth for Assassins, Gust for Destroyers) but since we got pet abilities on Tab, the big CC-escape is on 2 instead.
