Main Story requirements

I am wondering.....Is the Main Story (Yellow Arrows) linear and is it required for advancement? If the answer is yes then I am afraid I must quit this game. There is a quest that requires me to Glide to Gil for completion. Because off my age (69 and retired) I can no longer navigate using a keyboard and mouse and therefore must use a controller. Gliding is a skill I cannot master on a controller. I always lose sight off where I am going. Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
