soul shields not working

Not sure if this is a bug, but no matter what soul shield I put, it doesnt give me a single stat, and as you can see, the soul shield slots are red coloured, so I don't know what's missing there :/ Hope that someone could help me out of this, it's tough to progress through the game with only 1.1k hp (should be around 2k hp if the soul shields from jadestone village were actually working). don't want to sound like a total douche but it clearly says somewhere that an outfit needs to be equipped for the soul shields to work.
