Does Mail Expire?! Beeping An Alert?

So I've been around since Head Start and have done the Stamp-Spinning-Wheel-Thing since then. I have let my mailbox hit 18 items without claiming them. Today however, my mail started beeping. I have no idea why or how, because it has never beeped before when I got a new item. I'm wondering if this is a warning that my items will be deleted, because not date was placed in-game T-T. I'd like to decide wisely which character I give my items to before claiming them.

maybe this shares space with the main mailbox space? i think in the first tab "Mailbox" it says 0/20 ... maybe this is incorrect and it is in fact 18/20 because of the so-called "Recieved Items"

 

I would love and official answer tho, noone likes to loose items without even knowing :/
