Tips for Whirlwind Valley

Whirlwind Valley is currently in fever in contrast of its gloomy past, thanks NCWest's launching an attractive event.

However, I still see a lot of people who are clueless about what they should do in the battle, so I think I could offer them some tips to improve their chance of winning.

Overview:

6v6 is gear-dependent, but also strategy required. You may face people who can easily kill you, while you deal laughable damage on them. However, it does not mean that you will lose by default upon meeting stronger team, as long as your teammate are not too weak or afk.

Preparation:

I recommend to have at least 550AP, 115% accuracy - pretty much the same as your minimum PvE stats. However, you need to boost your HP and critical defense up enough to withstand attacks of multi players and survive to counter attack.

Best Soul Shields: 3 Sparring + 5 Challenger. You get them from floor 1-30 for Sparring, and 30+ for Challenger in Infinity Tower.

Easier to get: 3 Sparring + 3 Challenger + 2 Naksun. Find 5 Challenger may be a pain, so you can as well get Naksun instead.

Easiest to get: Full Naksun, or mix some with Naryu Labyrinth for even higher HP. Naksun's Soul shield can be grinded from Floor 9-15. There are also Badge to exchange for Soul Shields dropped from bosses or by exchange with Blackwyrm essences in Misty Wood.

No matter what you choose, you should fuse Critical Defense on all 8 pieces, with Reflex Primers (green is cheaper, but blue has better stats) made by Soul Warden or bought from marketplace. Don't bother building high critical rate, since Critical Defense lower both Critical Chance and Damage of your opponents, making you a tough piece to chew on.

Queue:

You should queue together with someone of same or higher gear than you. It would be easier to communicate, and you will at least avoid to have all five bad teammates.

The Rules

The battleground has three lanes. Each lane has a Brazier that will generate points.

The upper lane favors the right-side team to reach the Brazier first.

The lower lane favors the left-side.

The middle can be reached by both team at the same time.

The more brazier you capture, the faster the point generation becomes. You can also gain points by killing enemy players, who worth 30 points per kill.

As time passes, there will more underground tunnels opening and make direct paths between Braziers, allowing faster approach to re-capture seized braziers, or faster reinforcement sending against capture attempt.

You have unlimited Stamina to run freely. Your healing pots now have 3 minutes cooldown, so use them wisely

The team that reaches 1,800 points first wins.

Quests:

There are three quests here:

-Join three matches. The reason of a lot of afkers.

-Win one match. People tend to become afkers after getting one win

-Win three matches. This is a weekly quest that will be reset on Wednesday. You have plenty of time to complete it.

Strategies:

-Stick to your buddy if you go in pair. If you're both highly-geared, consider to solo two lanes at once, if the opponent is weak.

-You have a map, and can mark and draw on it by holding ALT. Pay attention on it. If you see your teammates put a flashing point or draw an X, it's either a rally point or an ask for help.

-Take a note on opponents who are easy to get killed, and who can stand and put up a fight. Try to focus-fire on the weak one to take him out, and get free points. You should try to remember those weak individuals and list them, so that you can kill them with ease in another match.

-If you face a situation where you cannot win, like against more than two tough opponents, being ganged on or against a whale who can curb stomp you, run fast with every of your escape skills. Don't be a feeder. Even if you fail to run and get killed, you will make those opponents waste time chasing after you, allowing time for reinforcement to arrive or sneak-capture on Brazier.

-Likewise, don't chase after runaway, or you may lose your Brazier, or face their reinforcement. Try to regroup with your teammate, if there is any nearby.

-In case that you successfully escape and no one try to go after you, try to watch them from afar. If they are trying to run somewhere, immediately launch an attack to re-capture the Brazier, or forcing them to return to deal with you, thus wasting their time. Run away again if you cannot handle them. Keep doing it back and forth to harass them.

-Be careful of Sins. These guys can sneak around and steal your Brazier, so you should be on guard constantly upon seeing Sin class in another team. Summoner can do so too, if you hit into their counter and makes them invisible during a battle. Their stealth lasts long enough to capture a Brazier.

-If you're a Sin, you should try to attempt stealing Braziers when no one notices it, or during the heat of battle.

-To protect their Brazier, people will attack anyone who attempt to capture it during a fight. You can use this mindset to distract them when they are comboing your teammates.

-If you are strong enough to solo 2-3 people at once, take your time defending a Brazier, so that your teammates can focus their fight elsewhere.

-This is a team fight, so help your fellow as much as possible. FM's Sheath, Summoner's Heal, BD/Des' Grab... whatever you can offer to protect your party and kill your enemies.

-If you cannot get all three Braziers because the opponent focuses their force against you and both of you are suffering losses and feeding points to each other, consider retreat and defend the two you have, which are often the top and bottom ones.

+If they turn full force on one of your Brazier, then theirs would be weak to capture

+If they divide trying to capture both of yours, you can sneak-steal theirs during their absence.

+There may be some defendesr though. If you cannot kill them, run away to avoid feeding

+Even if you fail the sneak-capture, they will pretty much become alert and send people to defend their brazier, thus lowering their offensive capability.

-As long as you have two Braziers and not meaninglessly feed them kills, you will eventually win the battle.

Rule of thumb, NEVER go alone in WWV. And don't just mindlessly charge straight into a battle you know you can't win. The objective is to STAY ALIVE AND CAPTURE. Killing is JUST A BONUS.

Don't be miles in the lead with two braizers captured and then the whole enemy team being stationed at one spot, just wait it out instead of running in, getting killed, and then letting the enemy team overtake into victory.

Being someone with like 5-10 FPS and can't exactly do much, even as a 670 Sin with no PvP gear, it's so much safer for me to stay with the entire group and play a support role in sniping CCs, blue buff, throwing Highwire which is completely inescapable, and dealing off-hand damage. I can't directly do much in a fight, but I'm still supporting nonetheless.

Hopefully we wont need to need to learn any of this when the devs equalize the gear in wwv

I feel like the first two points are best to be left out of your guide mostly because realistically they don't really promote teamwork and cooperation in a lot of situations. Based on my whirlwind valley experiences, the teams that usually split into 3s are the ones more likely of winning while those that solo eventually die and or fail to contribute as much. They usually end up soloing and capturing a point only to be caught and killed by a group of 2-3 opponents and have a brazier captured. Of course this depends on how well their knowledge of PVP is. Since this is a guide we should go by the presumption that we're talking about matches between more or less evenly matched people and individuals who have a good general idea of what PVP and whirlwind valley is about, unless stated otherwise. Then again even 2-3 lower geared individuals can defeat one p2w or high geared player with chain CCs so it's not a good idea to be taking a lane by yourself no matter how well geared you are. The only class I would personally give an exception to would be FMs since they have 1 uncounterable absolute immunity skill, 1 almost uncounterable absolute immunity skill, 2 situational defensive skills, and 3 iframes which they can link to activate their other defensive skills again.... but only to buy time. I would suggest sins too unless the opponents know how to deal with their constant stealth.

For the third point, it depends. For the fourth, not always. In fact I'd say rarely, given how even in whirlwind valley people don't communicate strategies as much as they complain and place the blame on others.

You mean just like weapon upgrades? or easier ways to get moonstones? really bro its just immature now

it's different.
weapon upgrade was a totally different thing and every1 knew we will get a material reducton on it, since other regions had it, was no question we will get some reduction as well earlier or later.
same thing applies to moonstones, other regions had many other way to farm them, ofc they will give more chance to drop them eventually, this was not question as well.
but 6v6 is gear based everywhere afaik, and ncoft just wouldn't do it by themselves. they apply the patch they get, not they creat them. they can be different in some small things, of course, but not in big changes.

yes, but no other region had 6v6 bg equalized, thus won't we

Pro tip : if enemy strong, afk till end :D

and how would u exactly identify a strong enemy team?
checking their gear?
they 4 vs 2 you and they win?
engage in equal fight and maybe, yet still u can win them if u keep them busy and 1 is stealing braziers
afking is the worst u can do. not even mantioning getting urself killed just fasten the process of losing and the enemy team winning.
don't afk, try it. u can get some points by losing but u also can get like 80-100 if u do something at least, whcih is 50%-ish
don't ever afk

No we didn't know they would lower mats at the time it seemed impossible especially with all the white knights saying it won't happen. The moonstones i'll give you that, but the wwv they will change it because they want and need people to play the game and participate in the event.

yes I agree to what you are saying. I didn't mean to quote you. it was supposed  to be for crimson

to crimson: please stop speaking on the ncsoft behalf.6v6 is staying gear dependent. Your going to be mad when we get the next bg that is gear dependent..If you want to try to get 6v6 equalized bug Korea development. Again people are still playing the game. No one is leaving the game because  of this event far as I can see. There is nothing  wrong with event. Each event caters to different player base.

not hard to gear up or even get crit defense.. No you don't have to farm infinity  No you don't have to farm naked and. You can just fuse regular ss with crit defense. The new  wwv is only 5 days old. it will start balancing out in a week or so.

I admit that it is very situational dependence. They may try to gang on you, but they don't know what to do as a team, like waste their CC when you go resist, allow you to counter attack them with ease if they are have zero cri.def. I meet this a lot, and I just curb-stomp them one by one for these fatal mistakes, thus free points.

If they can do proper chain CC, you know it's time to run, regroup and wait for a chance to strike back.

However, if you're capable to solo-defend/capture a Brazier, then why not? Being capable to that extend would greatly help your teammates to mind their business meanwhile. It's like having a hero unit in your team, letting the team focus elsewhere.

If they try to gang on you, they have to gather people, thus weakening their offensive power elsewhere. You can use this to evaluate their ability too, knowing who know doing stuffs and who just plain sucks.

For the third and fourth, it's situational too.  These tips are not always spot-on. What I want to do is giving some pointers so that you're not being a deadweight or cannot use your fullest potential.

All of my loses have come from 2 things: no communication and no teamwork. I can win with 400-500ap teammates IF, and only IF, they speak and we work together. Most scatter, like roaches when the lights come, when the match starts. This results in an insta-lose 100% of the time.

One thing I do not understand is how in the hell I go from no matches played, get TWO wins, and now I'm silver. Does that mean gold is 5 wins?

Thanks for the beginner's guide to 6v6 and WWV, it's always good to see people help the community!

If possible, I would like to help extend the tips and advice a bit:

Soul shields:

3 Challenger + 3 Sparring + 2 extras is certainly the best and most versatile combo. Currently I favour:
Challenger 7 6 8 3 + Sparring 1 4 5 + Labyrinth 2

This is because Lab 2 can provide 5300 HP, 231 acc and 98 def which outweighs the low fusion cap of 130.

Which nicely leads over to the stat / crit def discussion.

Crit Def:

Critical damage cannot be reduced below 120% of normal damage, so crit def will be highly valuable in the 0-1000 range, very valuable 1000-1500 and then start to drop off as more and more attacks will not be affected by higher crit def any more.

The highest useful value I can think of would be against a KFM's freshly buffed stage 3 (wind) comet strike spam under focused fighting spirit:
220%(gear) + 20%(weapon buff) + 100%(blue buff)

To mitigate that bonus down to 120% base you would need around 2200ish crit def. Question is if you want to invest so many extra points into a relatively rare attack situation that you might want to iframe anyway. so I usually recommend crit def only up to 1500-1800.

You can even play it risky and stay with 855 crit def from the two set boni, hoping for opponent pro players to neglect their crit damage in favour of other stats.

Other stats:

You want Combat Regen, pierce (!), HP, def and almost as important accuracy.

Second priority are evasion, block, then crit rate for certain procs, with crit damage being basically useless.

AP should be weighed individually against the other stats depending on the diminishing returns you get. Meaning at 4000 def an extra 200 def will not be worth a loss of 5 AP, but at 2000 def it might.

Gear:

- Crit def soul shield of course. Using a PvE soul shield is like halving your HP.
- Pet: There is almost no better value than a stage 10 pet, given the HP and defense bonus.
- Belt: Highest belts for highest combat regen and extra defense. Very big boost to survivability!
- Ring: The Hongmoon ring is really bad. While the other (necklace, earring, bracelet) are viable due to extra AP, for rings there are much better options. E.g. the easily obtained Breeze Ring.
- Earring you have a defensive option with the alpine earring, but the loss of AP hurts.
- Necklace you ca go defensive with soulstones necklace, but the pierce on HM is too good to waste.
- Bracelet: Have not found a good alternative to HM. At least the AP are good.

Consumables:

Heal potions are almost like a second tab, just a pity you can only use them once every 3 minutes. Heal up with dumpling whenever you can, 10% more HP is 10% higher chance to win.

Buff food: Use the HP/defense variant (e.g Seasoned Gnarlhorn) , it's very good value as it also persists through death.

Noteworthy facts:

- Many people overlook that capturing a brazier gives your team a 15 second immunity buff, anywhere on the map!
- One kill awards 30 points, hence the very good advice to not feed the enemy team with solo suicides.
- Each brazier gives you 1 point per second. Capturing all braziers at once gives you 5 points per second. So capturing and holding one single brazier an entire match is worth 10-20 kills! Compare this to the 1-8 kills per person you usually get per match.

Team strategies:

The following strategies I have found to have a signficant positive effect on the outcome of battles:

- Two equal power groups (normally 3 + 3, but this can also be 2 + 3 if last player is a sin set to ninja braziers). Main advantage is that 2 braziers held will give you advantage over time, and recapturing one brazier will automatically boost the other group.

- Ninja Sin(s) + big pack. The ninja captures the braziers to avoid over-time disadvantages, and with constant retaking you also get the team buff. This strategy fails if the sin is not good at surviving! If you have a good or two decent sins, you can also often get the all braziers advantage.

- Disruptor + big pack. Some Sins, summoners and destros or highly geared players can hold a brazier for a logn time even against high odds, always disrupting the attempt to recapture the brazier. Like above strategy only even more reliant on the skill of the disruptor. Added advantage of binding the other team's power. The is an especially strong strategy in parties where you have 1 or 2 players who are much stronger than the rest.

- Two static and one mobile team (normally 2+2+2). Advantage is the enemy often does not see through your pattern. You can capture and hold north and south, and the flexible team will run support the defenders, intercept other players running from spawn point or recapture the 3rd brazier for buff. This strategy has delicate balance and usually works best with a very even skill and power distribution across your and the enemy party. It's strong against 3+3 or ninja tactics, but a bit weak against big packs.

What does not work well is a single big pack (6 people), as you lose brazier points and buffs.

No we didn't know they would lower mats at the time it seemed impossible especially with all the white knights saying it won't happen. The moonstones i'll give you that, but the wwv they will change it because they want and need people to play the game and participate in the event.

They would not change the mode just because of the event... The event will end...

Mode is meant to be gear dependant and is ONLY pvp that is gear dependant (OPvP is mostly non-existant) and should not and will probably not be changed.

There might come a new mode with such thing, but who knows.

Just because there's an event running, doesn't mean they will change the whole thing for it.

some more tips for WWV:

Skill use:

Difficult to give advice since it's too huge a field and my knowledge of all the classes is not comprehensive enough. But there are some things that I feel are more general so I wanted to point them out:

- If your class allows, spec your TAB escape to escape from grabs, and only use it for grabs if possible. The new restrain mechanic means that while in 1v1 100-to-0 is impossible in OW, it can happen in seconds with 3 people on you.

- Chose your terrain to suit your skill set. Destros might favour the stony narrow paths in the middle lane, while mobile classes shine in the round arena-like areas around the braziers.

- Put more emphasis on survivability and healing when speccing skills. CC loses value since you can rarely finish combos in big fights. So Iframe > healing > CC = damage. Also pay close attention to cooldowns since battles can take 5 minutes but you often blow all you have in the first minute to get a first-kill advantage.

Partner teamwork:

- one great advantage of teams of two is that you can agree on attack combos beforehand as a team. The generic one now is one grab class (BD, destro) and a restrain attack partner. But many combos are great, like SF/FM/WL pull in skill plus a KFM's Comet Strike barrage or summoner's sunflower.

- If you have one defensive partner with bigger survivability let him run ahead ~10 meters. 90% of times he will be targeted first, and the offensive partner can jump in and focus on the same target.

- As mentioned above, if the fight is locked at a stalemate the taking of a brazier will decide it faster and more securely than just jumping into the fight. Even in worst case and you get interrupted this means the opponents got distracted by you.

Gems:

As for weapon gems, here are my recommendations:

1) AP Diamond. Def Diamond is a low budget option, but diminishing returns limit its usefulness at the top end.

2) Ruby. If you can get heptagonal epic damage, that's pretty good, otherwise stun+damage is a cheap and effective option. Remember you can take out and resocket gems for a small fee. If you have an AP crit ruby you might leave it in for convenience, and the heptagonal ones are actually superior to the damage trigger or stun rubies.

3) Topaz. AP plus drain on stun / KD target from the event. Heptagonal if you can afford it.

4) Aquamarine. Mainly cause it gives a big AP boost.

5) Amethyst. Actually only if you have a crit proc ruby. Otherwise move this to priority 6)

6) AP Beryl. This is superior to Sapphire as you want your accuracy as high as possible, so Sapphires will rarely proc. On other hand, some opponents will neglect accu, and you can get actual auto-evades.
