People Bid a high ammount than leave to avoid paying it.. This is a common thing people bidding 50g on a cold orb, and when they will win the bid they leave party in a cross dungeon instance to so they are not charged the gold for which they will win. This has to be an exploit.

This problem is there since the beginning. 
The only tip I know to not get trick by people like that is to enter manually your bid, as long as you have clicked on gold, silver, or copper, even if there is an outbid, the value in your window will not change.
