WHEN Will Character Portraits Be Re-Enabled?

Recommended Posts

Okay one issue: "Inappropriate ones"?

I'm sorry but the portrait is a tool for self expression, plus they don't have to look at the character's info if they don't want to. Along with that, this game features a character who's top leaves little to the imagination and an outfit that allows for you to see the nipples of your female character if you rotate the camera at the right angle.

Sorry to tell you this but, it seems illogical to ban portraits to combat "inappropriate" pieces of art meant to express a character inside of a video game. Like seriously...just re-implement them already.

What worries me is NCWest has a habit of disabling features outright, and never bothering to re enable or give and adequate response as to why it never returned, (Aion character profiles links anyone, or the entire website for that matter.

The character profile feature in this game is one of the few things I truly enjoyed messing with. I found it quite original compared to other mmo's. It'd be a shame if it's removed permanently due to a few immature teens/adults.

I honesty hope that's not the case... because if they permanently disabled character portraits, that would soooooo disappointing, like... as dramatic as it may sound, that would be a big reason on my 'to quit the game' list.

It would have been much easier if they just added a "Report Character Portrait" option and if it hit a certain number of reports or if the staff looked at it, then they could hand out a short ban (then long/perm if they continue) and remove their portrait or something. I hate it when gaming devs make us ALL suffer. Look at how we've already suffered a load of changes and restrictions thanks to bots... meh

What baffles me is that they thought people weren't going to abuse the feature in the first place. In their defense, however, I can understand why they disabled it. Minors play this game, and if, as some have said, people are putting actual porn images into their portraits then NCsoft would've opened themselves up to legal action if they didn't immediately begin taking measures against it. Most countries and districts have laws against "disseminating materials" to underage kids.

It might seem like a stretch, but if you're one of those with an "inappropriate" image you might want to delete it. You could potentially be arrested. No joke.

Never. There's no way for them to stop people from putting porn in it. So there's no reason for them to put it back. Just like with hackers. The only thing they can do is remove stuff so people can't abuse it anymore. Fixing stuff is too difficult for them.

im fairly certain that even when it's re-enabled in the game, someone will already come up with a work around for it. Besides, i'm just sipping my tea like kermit waiting to see how long it takes for NCSoft to fix the larger problems that the populous rants and raves about time and time again.

Greetings,

In order to prevent unintended file formats uploaded to the character profile system, the image uploader feature has been suspended and images with the incorrect formats will be deleted.

That aside,

NCSoft makes the rules. It may be a tool for your self-expression, but NCSoft has all rights to deny you expressing yourself that way in their game/server. If they deem that avatars depicting explicit sexual content/violence/unicorns/gore are inappropriate and detrimental to the population and a subject to moderation, then it's illogical of you to try and make them bend your way. And what you're trying to advocate is, I assume, not the actual content that's deemed "inappropriate", but whatever suggestive image of a scantily clad attractive lady which will most likely pass anyway. And whether or not the game already has a nippie in a particular place or a softcore naked Yura moaning on the ground is not a valid basis for changing moderation rules for profile pictures.

But that's quite unlikely the reason anyway. My take on the situation is that the image uploader, originally designed to upload your character's portraits taken in-game, was used to upload a variety of images by substituting them in your folder - which can't be reasonably stopped without radical and sophisticated changes, so NCSoft turned a blind eye on that or marked it "as intended".

Then people started to upload gifs, exploiting the universality of any modern image renderer. Which was also OK, until, as I assume, whichever of the following started happening:

- people, possibly bots, started uploading non-image formats, bloating the servers up and causing errors on profile view, possibly as a form of DoS or just finding exploits.

- people started uploading ridiculous-sized gifs, again bloating the servers and causing performance problems/problems viewing profiles.

The day the system was disabled, it was behaving very poorly already. My (normal jpg) picture took several minutes to upload, and crashed at least a few times before finally getting up there. I assume the reason for that was because it was pushing the performance limits or struggling with incorrect non-image formats on some server-side processing stage. Later that day the system was taken down.

Now, again I assume, NCSoft is either creating a check for uploaded image format/size or rethinking the upload image system in general, perhaps to create a system that doesn't allow any external image upload.

TL;DR Image upload wasn't disabled because of titties.

I'm curious. How would someone know your profile picture was inappropriate before actually looking at it?

word by mouth from a credible source like a friend or multiple people in faction chat discussing one certain persons profile picture.

Yes true, but most people look at other people's profile without prompting (e.g. on dungeon runs). How would that person know to expect to see something inappropriate?

lol now you're just asking a question you already know the answer to.

The problem was: You could upload massive image files. This caused the server to crash. Remember the market crashes a while back? Same server cluster, this is why.

The problem was not: Inappropriate content. That was handled on a case-by-case.

The fix... I'm not holding my breath.  I think we've lost this feature. I really, really hope I'm wrong, but knowing NC...

The problem was the quite frankly obscene images people were putting up on their profile. The moment it comes up and people find out the format needed they just going to put p0rn pics/gifs up again. Best way to fix that is to give them a 1 week ban or something stepping up in severity. And yea some player profiles took quite frankly AGES to load because of the size of pic/gif.

Obscene images had nothing to do with the uploader being disabled.

I know, this is really taking a long time. I'm honestly surprised that they've left a main social feature disabled for so long. It seems like they can't think of a solution to stop the few rude gifs manipulating their way into character portraits. I only want to update my character portrait with picture of my character's face which was taken via the in-game 'take photo' option, for crying out loud. If this doesn't get renabled any time soon, it's going on the top of my list of things that caused me to quit this game.

Omg stop trying to defend/justify what many were doing. It was not only about the gifs, which honestly? I'm glad to see them GONE they do nothing but make people's profile buggy, it was also about the retarded amount of porn in profiles.. "Inappropriate" doesn't even describe the things I've seen in some profiles. You see, this is the mentality, ohhh there's so many boobs in this game, that means I can upload any porn in my profile!!!... I wish I could slap this ppl with a fish. HELLO THIS IS NOT PORN HUB, IF YOU WANT TO USE THAT KIND OF CONTENT THIS IS NOT THE PLACE. and don't get me wrong, I'm not a Puritan by any freaking means, but there is a place for everything. And this was NOT the place for what many were using

Not everyone on this topic is defending those who use porn gifs/pics in their portraits. I've personally never seen porn in someone's profile picture so consider yourself "lucky."
