I've just been trying to get my hands on anything that gives me as much crit chance as possible since several skills depend on getting crits to work well, as well as gems that activate on critical hit. I have a high level diamond giving me evade and some defense from my soul shield, but I still mainly look at crit chance. Should I be investing in anything different?

You should leave your Evasion Diamond and look for an Attack Power one. About critical, you're doing fine. Try to get always more and it'll be ok.

Your crit is mostly going to come from your Soul Shield. I'm not sure what level you are or where your gear is currently at, but keep in mind that most heroic and end game Soul Shield gives random stats when unsealed and sometimes you won't get crit on them so you'll want to keep trying until you get crit. If you're lucky, you'll get the max crit roll. When you get crit, you want to upgrade the Soul Shield further by fusing it with crafted crit soul shield or a green looted soul shield with crit on it.
