What are my characters for?

So, at current, I main a FM and I love it. I want to get better at using it before I start pvping. Also, I am going to make a warlock tomorrow and I hear they are similar in play style to the FM. What are their roles in a party? What are their roles In general compared to the other classes? And, can someone point me in the direction of a build for each class that is beneficial for open world pvp?

FM - high ranged DPS, party defensive buffs

Warlock - somewhat okay ranged dps, party offensive buffs

All classes: Deal damage and survive.

That's all, pretty much. You don't need to worry too much about things like roles in this game.
