Can't See Partymembers

Has anyone tried this?

 

I got invited to party by a friend who's lower level. I go to where he is, but while I can see him on the map as a blue dot, I can't actually see his character. Furthermore, I can't see his HP or anything either, as his party member tab is dimmed and shows nothing. I'm dimmed to him too. Why is this? We're in the same channel and all I believe.
