Crashing with Manage Appearance option

Trying to create a new character with a base I have saved in the "Manage Appearance" menu. 

Every time I attempt to open the appearance menu in character creation the game freezes and eventually crashes.

The same also happens when trying to update the character profile image in game.

Also why is there no option to save an appearance of a character that is already in play? I think that would be very useful.
