What enem actually linked is what is used IN GAME when you press the F2 key. You can use the search box in game too to search for a character, and when you get the result, it will show you not only said character, but the account name and all the alts of that person too, regardless of server!

 

So yeah, it's a double edge sword. On one side, creepers can use it to stalk you no matter which character you're playing. On the other side, you can't act like a complete *cricket* and then try to hide on an alt, people will find you!
