Censored for “Questionable” Material in Western Release

It seems to me, that if most of the people that are for this type of censorship had their way in making a game, the entire thing would have-

-No lines of spoken dialogue (wouldn't want to offend anyone who is a mute, that would be ableist.)

-No combat against female npcs (you're perpetuating violence against women.)

-Locked in female presets (Because most men are sexist misogynistic pigs who make their female characters to be sexual objects.)

-Swords would be replaced with nerf bats (No need for that toxic masculine crap with muscle bound men wielding sharp objects.)

-There should be female only spaces in game (Because if Canada and Tumblr taught me anything it's that men are all rapists and should just not *cricket*.)

-Actually this game rotates around a war....That's sexist, women are always the main victims of war so says our lord and savior Hilliary clinton (19-feminists-who-think-feminism-is-a-sti

I'm 99% sure that most of the people screaming that a man peeping on a female in game and stealing her clothes is sexual assault and needed to be removed from a game as to not perpetuate real world sexual assault, would make the game exactly like the above. FFS people.

What I find funny is "THE REST OF THE WORLD" No, KR has not been censored, nor has JP, nor has Taiwan.  The only place that I have heard currently that holds a censor in BnS is China (Due to law policy).

And if I'm not mistaken the only thing they had to censor was the blood, which in most Chinese ports they just turn it white.

They censored pants for female chars as well.

I know this sounds really.....hypocritical, but I can understand china considering they have extremely strict laws in place on certain issues. I wish that wasn't the case as I don't believe anything should be censored for those faint of heart. But in China's case I'm assuming it had to do with some sort of law that kept them from bringing it into china if they didn't change it.

Hyperbole.

Hardly. A peeping tom telling you to steal a girls item so she is forced to marry him suddenly changed to: "I am studying xyz as they are a fascinating race. Please assist me in my studies and help me gain an audience with them." <--- That is literally the equivalent of of NPC's dialog changing from "We are doomed!!" to "I like wheaties <3" Neither have anything to do with the other, but they swapped the dialog to say it anyway because "localization."

On that quest the boy is basically depressed and crying over his father death and his now adoptive father ask the PC if he/she could help him . The Father's boy was probably a martial artist and when the boy was sad he used chi to charge a ballon so that if fly by itself, but the adoptive father is unable to do so.

After the PC manages to do it the boy is astounded, remembering how his father often do it when he was sad, and he ends saying "Father i will not cry anymore" holding his tears.

That explains a lot! The young boy says in the NA: "I have no father." I thought he meant it as his father had died, but the way he kept talking was weird. He talked more as if he didn't know his father died, as if he was a orphan all his life and never knew his father. I found it weird and confusing. I just couldn't figure out if the boy knew his father was dead or if the boys father had died before he was born.

BnS almost didnt launch in China due to the fact it was "showing" too much, they also fear that male players would get "horny" and start staying indoors more and not focus on studying (China is super competitive just like S.Korea in education), porn for example, in many places in China is banned due to it negatively effecting male students (I do not know why, this is not a case for all).  The government in China is just strict like that especially when it comes to sexualizing females, which they are big hypocrites about because they've made movies like that Sex and Zen thing yet it was not banned.  Like I said China's government works in mysterious and in an irrational way.  This is also coming from first hand source as I was from China, but have moved out and am now living in the US.

I mean I guess I can understand because the devs for BnS had 0 choice in the matter for the chinese release. But as for the rest of the world I honestly don't think that anyone else has any major issue with it. I mean I could tolerate the NA censorship if it prohibited their release but that's not the case.

Alot of people do, I usually don't in other games but I've been paying more attention to this game's questlines, both main and side.

Other than NA version having a different kind of underwear during character creation, that is... Right?

Different female poses and underwear.
They completely overhauled one of the side quests because they deemed it (Inapprops)
Changed a crap ton of dialogue
More plot holes than a slab of Swiss cheese.

I first started playing games during the time when the journey was what made the game fun, not skipping to end game and running the same dgn over and over again like some sort of 9 to 5 office job.

By the time MMO's started coming out, I was already in the habit of reading everything. Older games used to reward you for listening to some old NPC prattle on about nothing because sometimes what they said were part of clues to finding hidden items in the game that the main quest would never show you. Exploring was the fun and finding little secrets within the game was the reward.

Then theme park showed up and a lot of people stopped reading quest. Why read anything when the game literally spoon feeds you to the end and exploring is literally striped away from you as invisible walls trap you in a box and no secret caves or items are to be found? As they say: "old habits die hard." I tend to read all quest out of habit. If I get bored I drop it like I would a book though.

It is not what was censored that is the big problem here as much as WHY it was censored.  THe 'localization' team basically said they changed these quests and others because it made them 'feel uncomfortable' and 'perpetuated sexism towards women'.  This despite the fact that had they bothered to research regional fables, the quests in question were part of the culture..and presented in such a way as to eventually turn the idea of 'weaker women' on its ear.  In other words, they censored it because they didn't think consumers of this game were ADULT and INTELLIGENT enough to handle topics that made them FEEL and THINK.

I hope that clarifies matters for you.

Long story short, the 'localization' sucks. NCSoft has been told it sucks. Not only is the writing of poor quality but I would be shocked if anyone actually paid for some of this VA.

It's not entirely a matter of 'this made me uncomfortable.' Completely inoffensive things were changed as if the story needed to be understood by a bunch of first graders. It was done cheap. It was done badly. And it's being sold like it makes the game better somehow.

Don't spit in my water and tell me its soda, is all I'm asking.

Biggest shame about that: This is a real high profile game in Asia - not WoW big, but still big - and it has (or had) the potential to shake up the western market too... but after that hackjob of a localization and certain business model decisions, interest in it will die off pretty soon and it will join the other, more or less unremarked Asia ports like TERA or Aion, which is really a shame...

My interest was killed when they basically told us we would be getting the 100% uncensored game with unedited content and turned around and completely bold faced lied to us. And tried to spoon feed us some half-assed excuse as "It's part of the localization process."

*cricket* off ncsoft.

Yeah, mismanagement (censorship+business model) will kill this game.
And it's a real shame, the combat is fantastic and the PVP is awesome and has a very good chance to shine if supported adequately.

Then go back to the Chinese version with the shitty machine translations and costumes that disappear after a month.

We already know the *cricket* story, what does it matter what they did with the localization, other then, it's the internet we must cry about everything on it?

Besides the time travel thing at the beginning of act 3 came completely out of nowhere and is never mentioned again in the original version.

Personally, I don't know the story, yet.

From what I'm reading in this thread I am rather annoyed at their 'localization' of it.

In many games, when available, I play with the Japanese audio.

Most of those times I disagree with some of the dialog compared to what I'm hearing.

Some have been worse than others, but it sounds as this one would be quite a drastic difference.

I actually wouldn't mind a fan re-sub mod, considering what I'm reading in here.

Thanks :D Definitely made me think more about this in a different way.

Fortunately for me (at least, just in this case), I'm not that big on PvE/lore. At least, not yet. I just wanted to be sure no other costumes were changed from their original look, or that nothing was changed to affect game-play.

Well, the underwear and poses for Gon female were changed. A shame since its the best one but ok since it doesn't affect gameplay. I don't buy the excuse of "player complain it gets in the way of character creation" though. Its clear they made it up so they can take it out and put it in the cash shop later.

The way I look at it, and actually one of the reasons I prefer writing my series in the Eastern style, is the fact this genre doesn't 'pull punches' so to speak to cater to the sensitivities or 'target demographic' of the audience.  It tells a story and includes elements that make you feel for the characters both good and bad without trying to obscure what happens based on what may 'offend' some.  This allows for a deeper and more involving story.

Like it or nor, MMORPGS are interactive storytelling / acting exercises, with gameplay mechanic and such to allow for participation by the audience in the deeper story.  Hobbling the tools you have to tell a story, particularly in a mature genre / setting does a disservice to your audience.  In this case, one has to wonder what else in the future a 'PC' localization team will determine shouldn't be 'in the story'.  This is not what I, nor many others, play for.

I don't understand why they felt the need to cater to the sensitivities of a particular group of people in a game that has breast size and body sheen sliders. The promo art alone will show you what kind of game this is. The kind of people who would be offended by these things likely aren't interested in this game in the first place. And if they are, aren't these quests optional? I guess that isn't good enough for social justice authoritarians; if they don't like it, then no one is allowed to enjoy it.
