how can I actually play this with a controller?

do I need to just go out and buy a pc gamepad? my ps3 pad seemingly will only work with anti micro which I think isn't quite smooth enough I cant make myself run 80% of the time trying to double tap the joystick and I kind of have to guess at how fast /hard to press the L triggers  to make the button set shift to enable the zxcv keys.  Is anyone actually able to use the ingame pad settings with a ps3 or ps4 controller without mapping the keys to the keyboard? I can't search these forums for help only google and Ive tried xpadder ds3 and xinput but none seem to enable gamepad mode although it sounds like it worked for some other people but Im not sure anymore maybe they're just mapping the keys to the keyboard w/o using gamepad mode.
