climbing steep cliffs looks like lag/stuttering

i've found on numerous occasions that while scaling up the side of steep cliffs, your character stutters like there's lag. i'm guessing it's not lag, but the way the toon's location is being displayed (and reset).

I believe this is actually caused by the way the collision with terrain is checked on the server side. The server likely uses a lower-detail version of the terrain to calculate the collision (to make sure people aren't ghosting through things they shouldn't be), and that lower-detail version has a different slope than the high detail version your client is using. This means that your client thinks you can walk up the hill, but the server thinks you can't.

 

My suggested solution would be to either use a higher-detail version of the terrain on the server, or allow minor collision clipping. By that I mean only preventing the player from making the movement if the movement would require going significantly through a solid object.
